MainPower is working hard to be an employer of choice, attracting the best people with the right skills and attitude to make a positive impact within the business.
One way to do this is to provide attractive benefits and opportunities to employees. A new employee benefit that was introduced at the end of 2018 was the MainPower Bright Spark Scholarship. This award is available to children, stepchildren, grandchildren, brothers and sisters of current MainPower employees and helps fund the tertiary study of the recipient.
Jessica Price, daughter of MainPower Line Mechanic Brent Price, is the 2019 MainPower Bright Spark Scholar. Jessica is in her first year of study at the University of Canterbury, studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Psychology. Jessica hopes to gain the qualifications and experience necessary to become a practicing child psychologist in order to help combat the heightened numbers of teen suicide in North Canterbury since the earthquakes.
“I have an interest working in a school as a counsellor, or possibly working with the justice system or Oranga Tamariki to work with troubled or in danger youth. Through my career, I hope to help other people, and help ensure the future of our population,” Jessica says.
Jessica will receive $1,000 each semester for the next three years of her studies, to assist with course fees, housing costs and other expenses as she works towards this very worthwhile goal.
