New sports facility to be named MainPower Stadium

MainPower has been announced as lead naming rights sponsor of the new $28M sports facility, Stadium Waimakariri.

MainPower is the first major naming rights sponsor to be announced to partner with the North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust in advance of the official opening of the four-court sports facility in July next year.

Located on Coldstream Road, the 6000msq building, with seating of up to 500 spectators, will add to a suite of neighbouring sporting facilities already bearing the MainPower name, including MainPower Cricket Oval and MainPower Hockey Turf.

The announcement was made following the celebration marking 10 years of the MainPower North Canterbury Primary Schools Sports Coaching Programme, held at MainPower Cricket Oval on Friday 30 October 2020.

The decade milestone was celebrated with a gala event and coaching demonstration, including students from many of the 41 participating North Canterbury primary schools.

Following this was a formal ceremony recognising the programme’s history. In addition, four 2020 MainPower Youth Sports Scholarships were announced, in lieu of the North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust’s annual award ceremony which was cancelled this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The four scholarship recipients, each receiving $2000, were named as Macey Fraser (Football), Jacob Turner (Mountain Biking), Star Richens (Figure Skating) and Olivia Slone (Archery).

MainPower sees the naming rights investment for such a key community facility as a natural extension to their long-term commitment to sport in North Canterbury. Andy Lester, CEO of MainPower says, “We are proud to be supporting a facility that will deliver such huge benefits for the community. We believe this will further enhance our long-standing partnership with the North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust and the work they do with local youth and promoting healthier lifestyles through sport.”
