As part of MainPower’s commitment to reduce the frequency of unplanned outages to the Hanmer Springs area, we are preparing to undertake two-days of planned power outages to complete scheduled electrical maintenance and upgrades to the area.
Completing this work over two days will reduce the need for future planned outages. This work has been planned in consultation with the Hanmer Springs Community Board and a subsequent community meeting in early 2024.
Outages will affect most of the Hanmer Springs Village over both days. Properties will be without power from 7:00am until 6:00pm on either Tuesday 24 or Wednesday 25 March. Electricity will be restored to all connections at the end of the day.
Main areas affected:
Tuesday 24 March 2026
7:00am – 6:00pm
Streets around:
- Chalet Crescent
- Alpine Avenue
- Acheron Heights
- Cheltenham Street
Wednesday 25 March 2026
7:00am – 6:00pm
Streets around:
- Rippingale Road
- St James Avenue
- Oregon Heights
We have created an interactive map to assist you in identifying if your property is affected and on which day.
You can access the map through this link.
You can search for your property address and zoom in and out on the map to check. Toggle which day outage you view using the layers tab.
MainPower will be undertaking planned maintenance and upgrades to the Hanmer Springs electricity network.
During the outage you will see many of our team completing as many jobs as possible including; pole replacements, line upgrades, underground cabling, asset replacement and tree maintenance. There will also be traffic management in place to support our work.
Generation
Generators may power some of the town, including some of the central business hub. The location of generation assets has been planned to align with our network configuration, and to maintain supply to key community services.
Generated connections may still experience some short power outages as we connect and disconnect generators safely.
Find out how you will be impacted
Notifications will be sent by MainPower and Electricity Retailers to the contact information used for power bills.
Notifications from MainPower will be sent via text message and email. Notifications from your electricity retailer will be sent via email or post (depending on how you receive your power bill).
The notifications will detail exactly how your connection will be impacted. For example, you may be notified of multiple short outages, which will allow us to connect generation. Or, you may be notified of two full day outages between 7:00am and 6:00pm (power will be restored overnight).
If you are not the contact person on an electricity bill, you can contact us on 0800 30 90 80 to find out how your connection will be affected.
Please note:
-
- If a generator fails, there is no alternative generation available. All Hanmer Springs connections are advised to be prepared for planned or unplanned outages at any time.

- This work has been planned in consultation with the Hanmer Springs Community Board and a public meeting in early 2024 and is part of a 3-5 year plan to complete planned works during an annual two day window, until complete.
-
- We cannot guarantee that we will not need outages in the future to complete urgent works. However, all efforts will be made to plan future works into agreed future annual windows for outages.
Thank you for your patience while we undertake this essential work.
We understand that planned and un-planned outages are inconvenient. Completing this work over two days will reduce the need for multiple planned outages throughout the year.
The upgrades and maintenance we are completing will ultimately improve the reliability of the electricity network to the area.
