Danger: Felling trees near power lines
MainPower has experienced a number of recent outages due to members of the public felling trees near power lines without following the correct process. This is incredibly dangerous and needs to be completed by a suitably qualified arborist. Please contact MainPower or visit the Trees and power lines page on our website for more information on how to fell trees and maintain vegetation safely when near power lines.
Treat all lines as live during the outage period; power may be restored at any time. If you require further information, please call MainPower’s 24-hour fault line – 0800 30 90 80; to report an emergency call 111.
MainPower has been distributing electricity to the North Canterbury region for around 100 years. We deliver electricity to over 40,000 homes and businesses via 5,071 kilometres of overhead lines and underground cables, across a geographic area of 11,180 square kilometres. Our network area spans from north of the Waimakariri River, through the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts to Kaikoura.
MainPower is a consumer-owned company. The MainPower Trust holds the ownership of the company on behalf of the communities of North Canterbury and for qualifying customers. Learn more about the MainPower Trust here, or visit the Trust's website.
Consumer ownership of MainPower entitles qualifying customers to a rebate. The rebate is passed onto all retailers on the MainPower network and is generally shown as a discount on customers' monthly power bills. Some retailers choose not to show this rebate as a separate item on their invoices, instead the rebate is bundled with other charges.
